Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 2026

Aangan (“Aangan”, “we”, “us”) is a community platform for residential communities, available as a website and as mobile apps for Android and iOS. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.

Information we collect

  • Account & profile. When you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive your name, email address, and (for Google) your profile photo. You may add a display name and residence details (such as your block/flat) within your community.
  • Community content. Content you create in the app — posts, comments, messages, event RSVPs, registrations, poll votes, listings, and similar — together with your community membership.
  • Community finances. If your community uses the accounting features, records of maintenance dues and payments for your flat (amounts, dates, and method such as cash, UPI or cheque) are stored. We do not collect card numbers or bank credentials.
  • Fitness data (optional). If you turn on step tracking, we read your daily step count from your device or Health Connect (with your permission) and sync it to your community so it can appear on step challenges and leaderboards. We read step counts only; we do not read any other health data, and you can turn this off at any time.
  • Microphone (optional). If you use the voice option of the Mitra assistant, your speech is transcribed to text by your device’s built-in speech recognition. We use the resulting text to answer your request; we do not record, store, or transmit the audio itself.
  • Device & usage. Basic technical data such as the platform you use and, if you enable notifications, a push token so we can deliver alerts. We may keep limited logs to operate and secure the service.

AI features (Mitra and recommendations)

Aangan uses Anthropic’s Claude to power the Mitra assistant and to order the suggestions on your Discover feed.

  • What is sent. For Mitra: the messages you type (or dictate) in that chat, plus the specific app data needed to answer — for example your own outstanding bills when you ask what you owe. For recommendations: the titles and short reasons of the suggestions being ranked, and your declared interests and skills.
  • What is never sent. Your email address, phone number, password or payment details. Mitra can only read data you are already allowed to see in the app.
  • Actions need your confirmation. Mitra can draft an action — raising a ticket, booking an amenity, joining a group — but the app only carries it out after you tap Confirm.
  • Not used to train models. We use Anthropic’s API under terms that do not permit your content to be used to train their models.

If your community has these features turned off, nothing is sent.

Your shared profile (across communities)

By default, your profile is visible only inside your own community. You may optionally turn on a shared profile card, which makes a limited version of your profile visible to residents of other communities on Aangan. It is off unless you turn it on, you can turn it off at any time, and it never includes your flat number, phone number or email address. Each field on your profile also has its own visibility setting, and anything you mark Private is visible only to you.

How we use information

  • To provide and operate your community’s features.
  • To authenticate you and keep your account secure.
  • To send notifications you have opted into.
  • To maintain, troubleshoot, and improve the service.

How information is shared

Content you post is visible to other approved members of your community (and, for cross-community features, to members of the relevant area or wider level). We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for cross-app advertising or tracking. We share data only with service providers that help us run the platform (for example, hosting and authentication), and when required by law.

Data retention & deletion

We keep your information for as long as your account is active. You can delete your account at any time from inside the app: Settings → Delete my account. Deletion is immediate and cannot be undone.

What is deleted: your name, email, phone number and photo; your profile, interests, skills and languages; your direct messages and Mitra conversations; your habits, step history and challenge entries; your notification tokens; and the activity history behind recommendations.

What is kept: records that belong to your community rather than to you — invoices, payments and other financial records, votes already cast in polls and elections, and notices or tickets you posted for the community. Your society needs these for its own accounts and governance. They are kept with your name replaced by “Former resident” and no longer identify you.

Full details, including how to request deletion if you cannot access the app, are on our account deletion page.

Your choices

  • You can edit your profile details within the app.
  • You can disable notifications in your device settings.
  • You can turn your shared profile card on or off, and set each profile field to Private.
  • You can delete your account from Settings at any time.

Children

Aangan is intended for residents of a community and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the date at the top of this page.
